PHOTO: TONY KARUMBA / AFP Months after the death of Sudan, the world’s last male northern white rhino, scientists said on Wednesday that they have grown embryos containing DNA of his kind, hoping to save the subspecies from extinction. With only two northern white rhino (NWR) known to be alive today — both infertile females — the team hopes their breakthrough technique will lead to the re-establishment of a viable NWR breeding population. “Our goal is to have in three years the first NWR calf born,” Thomas Hildebrandt, head of reproduction management at the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Berlin, told journalists of the work. “Taking into account 16 months (of) pregnancy, we have a little more than a year to have a successful implantation.” The team’s work, using a recently-patented, two-metre (6.6-foot) egg ex...

Apple And Samsung Settle Lengthy iPhone Patent Battle

Image
. The world’s two biggest smartphone makers reached a truce in their seven-year-old court battle a month after a federal court jury ordered Samsung to pay Apple some $539 million for copying patented iPhone features. That award was seen as a victory for Apple, which had argued in court that design was essential to the iPhone. Financial terms of the settlement were not revealed and neither company elaborated on the brief court order which dismissed the litigation dating back to 2011. “Whereas the court has been advised by the parties that the above-entitled action has been settled, all remaining claims and counterclaims in this case are hereby dismissed with prejudice,” US District Court Judge Lucy Koh wrote. When contacted by AFP for comment, Apple referred to a statement released last month after the jury announced the damages award. “This case has always been about more than money,” the statement read. “It is important that we continue to protect the hard work and innova...

Revenge Of A Forgotten Medical ‘Genius’

Image
It’s not an uncommon fate for a pioneering scientist: languishing unrecognised in his time before dying in obscurity. But as his 200th birthday approaches, the life-saving work of a Hungarian obstetrician is finally getting its due. Decades before Louis Pasteur won widespread acceptance for the germ theory of disease, Ignac Semmelweis was battling his peers to accept what is today medical orthodoxy — doctors should thoroughly disinfect their hands before treating patients. Born on July 1, 1818, Semmelweis joined the obstetrics department of Vienna’s general hospital in 1846 and was immediately struck by the extremely high maternal mortality rate in the wing where student doctors trained: it stood at more than 10 percent, at times going up to almost 40 percent. By contrast, in the neighbouring wing where midwives trained, the rate stayed under the contemporary average of three percent. “This disparity troubled Semmelweis enormously and he started a thorough epidemiologi...

Meet Therese, The woman who reads 100 books in a Month

Image
Meet Therese, she’s a business development manager living in Berlin, Germany. Last month, she managed to read over 100 nonfiction titles in psychology, politics and leadership. It started with a bet. A colleague challenged her to read Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers: The Story Of Success in two hours. As determined as she was, she couldn’t meet the deadline. She got through the first few chapters relatively quickly but found it impossible to finish the book in the designated 2 hours. Although she lost the bet, she had an idea. “I want to read more nonfiction books—I find it really useful to read the key takeaways from lots of books to help me get a feeling for what’s an absolute must for my to-read list!” She found several websites, blogs and apps that transform books into ‘bite-sized’ content. In the end, she opted for the Blinkist app. As one of the first services to condense nonfiction books into quick reads, the Blinkist app has 2,000+ bestselling nonfiction titles in its library...

Be Careful: Check Out 10 Early Warning Signs Of Diabetes You Must Not Ignore

Image
Like car needs fuel to move, human's body needs energy to function properly.   When you eat, your digestive tract breaks down nutritive elements, converts them into glucose and sends it to the bloodstream.    At the same time, the pancreas releases hormone insulin in order to transport glucose from blood into the cells, which can use it as energy.   But this system may fail, and blood sugar levels may become elevated because of insufficient production of insulin or decreased cells' sensitivity to it.   This condition, commonly known as diabetes, affects nearly 422 million people in the world, some of whom don't even know about the problem.    In 90% of cases, diabetes appears when body cells become resistant to normally produced insulin.   Specialists say that those who are overweight or obese, don't manage high blood pressure, have high cholesterol levels and are physically inactive, have dramatically high ris...
