Gov. Wike of Rivers, Condemns Alleged Attack On Fayose, PDP Supporters

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has condemned the alleged attack on his counterpart in Ekiti State, Governor Ayodele Fayose and some supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who took part in a rally at the state government house on Wednesday.

While condemning the alleged attack, he said it is a pointer to what Nigerians should expect in the build-up to the 2019 elections.

The Governor said this on Wednesday while addressing journalists at the Rivers State Government house in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

He also noted that his state may suffer the same fate, and therefore, called on the people to be alert.

Wike, however, urged the people of Ekiti State and supporters of the PDP not to allow the incident dampen their morale ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

Security operatives were said to have dispersed some supporters of the PDP by firing gunshots in the air while they converged on the popular Fajuyi Park in Ado Ekiti, the state capital on Wednesday.

Afterwards, Governor Ayodele Fayose attempted to lead the supporters back to the park but the move was thwarted by security operatives who reportedly fired gunshots again.

The development resulted in the relocation of the rally to the Government House premises, where Governor Fayose and other PDP leaders were expected to address the party members.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of Operations, Joshak Habila, confirmed the incident to Channels Television.

Mr Joshak explained that the move by the law enforcement agents was to prevent a breakdown of law and order in the state capital and other parts of Ekiti ahead of the July 14 governorship election.

But Governor Fayose accused policemen of beating and shooting at him and also brutalising his party’s supporters.

“They (the police) are beating anybody who has any sign of PDP on them. They are not picking our calls; they’ve made up their minds to do this evil.

“I am in pain, I am in severe pain. I can’t turn this neck anymore. If anything happens to me, the Inspector-General of Police should be held accountable,” the governor told reporters while crying at the rally.
