National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Adamu Ciroma.

In his condolence message on Thursday, Tinubu said with the demise of the former finance minister, the country has lost an illustrious leader, a consummate politician, and an accomplished public servant.

Reacting to the death of the former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader, he said, “Mallam Adamu Ciroma was one of the illustrious leaders this country has produced.

“He was a politician of note. You cannot but recall his days in the Second Republic National Party of Nigeria and in the Peoples Democratic Party where he was one of the party’s founding fathers.”

The former governor noted that Ciroma also made a name as an experienced technocrat and skillful public servant, particularly as CBN governor and in later years as a finance minister.

“He was a fine man who played politics with a commitment to serve the people and change the society. This did not come as a surprise given his background honed by sound education at the popular Barewa College and University and his nationalistic worldview,” Tinubu added in his tributes to the late minister.

“My condolences go to the Ciroma family and the people and government of Yobe State. May his soul rest in peace,” he said.

Ciroma reportedly died at the age of 83 on Thursday at a hospital in Abuja after a protracted illness.

Born on November 20, 1934, the former CBN governor played numerous roles in government and politics during his lifetime.

He received his secondary education at Barewa College in Zaria, Kaduna State; and went to the University of Ibadan before going on to become the pioneer editor of New Nigerian Newspaper in Kaduna.
